10 years since brutal murders
On May 14, 2015, authorities discovered the bodies of Savvas Savopoulos, his wife Amy, their 10-year-old son Philip, and housekeeper Vera Figueroa inside their multimillion-dollar home in the city’s Woodley Park neighborhood.
The victims had been tortured before the house was set on fire.
Daron Wint, a former employee of Savopoulos’ company, was convicted in 2018 and sentenced to life in prison.
The case remains one of the most shocking crimes in recent D.C. history.
DC Mansion Murders: Background
On May 14, 2015, three members of the Savopoulos family -- Savvas, Amy, and their 10-year-old son Philip -- along with their housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa, were killed in their Washington, D.C., home in what became known as the D.C. Mansion Murders.
Authorities responding to a fire at the multimillion-dollar residence discovered the bodies of Savopoulos, his wife, and their son. Figueroa was found unconscious with severe injuries and later died at a hospital.
Investigators determined that the victims had been held captive for at least 18 hours while arranging for a $40,000 cash delivery to their captors. Court documents indicate that after the money was dropped off, all four were killed.
Daron Wint, a former welder at Savopoulos’ company, American Iron Works, was linked to the crime through DNA evidence.
According to court records, Wint’s DNA was found on the crust of a partially eaten slice of pepperoni pizza in a box near where the three adults were found.
The pizza was among two ordered by Amy Savopoulos the night before while the victims were being held against their will.
Wint was convicted in 2018 and sentenced to life in prison.
